– How to Study for the ACT –
Putting It All Together
Now that you’ve seen the key strategies for all four sections of the ACT, the next best question is this: what, exactly, should you do with them?
If you think about it, there’s certainly no shortage of information out there to help you raise your ACT scores. Walk into a bookstore or check out Google and you’ll see countless books, flashcard sets, courses, classes – the list goes on and on. Yet, despite all the options out there, it seems like most people’s ACT scores are basically at a standstill. There’s a good reason for this:
Without the proper system in place, no amount of information can help you.
Remember my Spanish analogy from page one of this guide? There are countless Spanish-to-English dictionaries out there, and you can grab a used Spanish textbook on Amazon for a couple of bucks. So why aren’t more people fluent in Spanish? Because they don’t have a step-by-step, customizable system to help them learn it.
If you go to Spain for a summer, and you enroll in a great course, you’ll be semi-fluent by the time you leave. You’ll learn what you need to in the right order, and you’ll use it frequently enough to retain it permanently and with instant recall. These are the very elements that are necessary in any great learning system.
If you want to become “fluent” in the ACT, you need three elements in your learning system:
1) Material
A great ACT system will help you to figure out exactly which material you don’t know, document it, and then permanently memorize it. You already probably know at least 75% of all the material required to get a perfect ACT score – it’s the other 25% that’s keeping you down.
If you find a system that helps you to diagnose the small portion of the math, grammar, and comprehension-based material that you don’t know, organize it, and then knock it out step-by-step, you’ll start to rapidly improve.
2) Strategy and Tactics
We devoted the vast majority of this guide to the key strategies and tactics that’ll help you to get a better ACT score. Once your system uncovers the material elements that you don’t know, it should combine those elements with strategy and tactics so that you can kill two birds with one stone.
If you find a way to study your key materials on actual ACT problems, learning to apply the proper approaches and material knowledge at the same time, you’re going to be in incredible shape. But there’s one more element necessary in any great learning system:
3) Application
How well do you think you’d speak Spanish if you never actually spoke to anyone, and never got a chance to say anything out loud? Why do you think people become fluent so quickly when they move to a new country?
Learning all the material and strategy in the world won’t help you unless you apply your knowledge to realistic situations.
Once you’ve picked up all the material knowledge you need to master the ACT, and practiced all the strategies and tactics necessary to use it, there’s only one more step: you need to frequently, repeatedly apply it to realistic, timed, graded ACT problems and practice tests.
Once you’re able to consistently answer real ACT problems under realistic conditions, you’ll have all three elements you need to get awesome ACT scores. Any system that coaches you on the ACT should show you how to take, grade, and analyze your ACT. If it does, you’ll not only improve your test-taking skills – you’ll also figure out where you currently stand, what you still need to practice, and where to put most of your focus.
No matter how long you have to study, make sure you have a great system in place!
Now that you know some of the best strategies for each section of the ACT, and now that you know what to look for in a great learning system, it’s time to get to work!
The sooner you start prepping for the ACT, the more points you’ll be able to gain, and the less stressful the entire experience will become. Even if you can only put in a few minutes a day, starting to prep now will give you the foundation you need to achieve the scores you deserve.
Find a great system, set up a consistent schedule, and get cracking! You have enough to give you an incredible foundation for your ACT prep. Now it’s up to you to put it to use!
