    Essentially, the PSAT is just a shorter version of the SAT without an essay. The format, material, and difficulty level are almost exactly the same, but there are fewer problems (and hence the exam takes about half as long). The other big difference: the PSAT does NOT count for college admissions – only the SAT does. The PSAT given in sophomore year is given purely as a practice test, and the one given junior year can qualify you for a National Merit Scholarship.
