Scores are Extremely important! Colleges don’t just think “Hey, Sam is awesome, we totally love his application and oh, look, he’s ALSO got a good score!”  No, they have a folder with your grades, your scores and everything you submit.  If the “metrics” aren’t good enough and you aren’t an athlete or being recruited for some reason, you might not even get a first look. You need scores that are higher than the minimum your school requires, higher than their “cut-off,” in order to even get your application looked at.

High scores won’t necessarily get you accepted, but low scores will certainly keep you out.

And about “score optional” colleges.  Don’t be fooled, high scores are still important.  They don’t “require” scores by they will have to publish high average test scores for their accepted students.  So even though they don’t require you submit, you will go yourself a favor by taking the tests and getting great score.
