Online ACT and SAT Test Prep System › Forums › SAT Prep › I am currently practicing for the SAT next week and my weakest area in the Reading sections are the passages from novels. Do you have any specific strategies that I can focus on for these types of reading passages. I tend to miss questions primarily because I missed a detail in the passage or because I just did not understand the whole point of the passage.
These reading passages are the trickiest! The SAT purposely includes answers that they know will make you doubt yourself and everything you’ve studied!
If you’re always stuck between two answer choices, the situation isn’t the reading – it’s that you’re getting tricked or deceived by one of the wrong answer choices. In these situations, your best bet is to focus more on the WRONGNESS of the answer choices than the rightness. Remember: four of the answers are WRONG. They are factually, objectively, without-question wrong – so if you have two choices left, one of them must be. With that in mind, stop focusing on what you like or what’s “better” about the choices, and instead only focus on what’s WRONG with them. For one answer choice, you’ll find that there’s a problem – there must be. For the other, you won’t. If you focus exclusively on errors, eliminating rather than picking, and combine that with your more focused reading, you’ll see big strides!
